Escalator takes the ideas of ascent and descend and crashes them together with thoughts about memory, resolution and apprehension. A patchwork of shapes coalesces, a quilt of bricks and mortar. Roughly hewn, worn down. Battered bricks. Evidence of history, of people, walking and work.
The staircase is symbolic of both progress and oppression. People are transported to higher ground, wider horizons or shunted down into the dungeon, trapped beneath traditions and laws.
Ascend, rise up, progress. Virtues people aspire to through education, work and chance. To scale is to climb. To scale is to change the ratio of a measurement. In both senses one might climb to new heights or change ones position.
Descend, climb down, degressive. A descent by stages or steps. For every staircase leading up to new heights, the same flight of stairs leads down, returning.
