Come Together: The Art Fair and the Biennale
November 12, 2010
The Art Fair and the Biennale have grown to become arguably the two most significant mechanisms of the international art market for the dissemination and distribution of art works across national and cultural boundaries. This course will analyze and discuss the trajectory of the art fair and the biennale taking into account historical precedents, cultural contexts, economic factors and the players who have dominated these arenas. Topics covered will include globalization, Art Basel, soft power diplomacy, national pride, cultural rehabilitation, Art Chicago, urban regeneration, temporal zones of art activity, the curator as rock star, funding the arts, Sub prime meltdown, the Miami factor, and more.

Art Loop Open, Paris, Chicago & a Drunken Boat
October 6, 2010
Well i have to say that the last 2-3 months since getting back from the UK have been non-stop. i thought that when school started up again things might settle down, but i’m teaching like 5 classes now and so things have largely gone from bad to worse in terms of time management. which is just basically a very long winded way of saying my website, as you can see needs urgent TLC and i’ve been pretty damn remiss about posting upcoming shows and the like apart from on the ubiquitous facebook.
Translations from tom burtonwood on Vimeo.
Translations, produced in collaboration with Jacob C. Hammes has been selected for the inaugural Art Loop Open competition here in Chicago. Art Loop Open begins on October 15th and invites the general public to vote on the best work from a selection of 200 artists, sited at venues around the Chicago downtown area. People can use their cell phones or smart phones to text or scan their votes. Translations will be on display in the lobby of the thoroughly bad ass Hard Rock Hotel. I think our geometric movements and powerful audio will resonate very well with the ambiance of their space! Please come check it out and vote! We produced Translations earlier in the year as part of Three Walls series Chasing Two Rabbits. In September it was published in issue 12 of Drunken Boat — big shout out + thank you to Rob Ray for including our piece on the Drunken Boat!
Also big shout out to Connie Gillock for including my work in her recent project at Vinic in Evanston and the upcoming show in Paris. Needless to say i am very excited about show my work in the French capital and i hope they have a wonderful time. I will not be in attendance : \
I’d like to thank, in no particular order: Jessica Cochran for selecting ten of my Color Studies for Mano/Mundo/Corazón: Artists Interpret La Lotería, this show is awesome and is up for another 2 months, so if u find yourself in the near south loop downtown do check it out, there are a load of brilliant artists in the show like Joyce Owens, Miguel Cortez & Michael Pajon to mention but a few. Also big thank you to Johannah Silva for including Holly and I, in “Artists Showing Artists” at her space in Portage Park and Michael Rea / Dave Olsen and the Gimme Baby Robots crew for organizing the Portland show a few months ago now, and to let everyone know that the show will be up at some point in Chicago before Xmas;
Also I will be installing one of my unfolding sculptures at Clutch Gallery in late November. Clutch is a year long curatorial project by Meg Duguid. Check out this recent interview Meg did with Chicagoarts where she talks about the project and the artists who have taken part.
Finally a big thank you to everyone who has collected, commented on and “liked” my Color Studies paintings that i have been posting on facebook, on flickr and here on my website. It’s very exciting to connect directly with my audience through these social media networks, much more fulfilling than just putting the work on a wall and reading the guest book a month later. My plan for the color study pieces is to produce 100 of them. This sequence will then be redistributed as both an animation and published as a full color book. For now i am posting Composition 2.44 shortly and will hopefully find time to get in the studio this weekend and push past the 50 mark. As usual keep an eye out on facebook or flickr for these pieces.
Ok those are my updates, i will be posting fairly regularly in the run up to and during Art Loop Open to drum up votes. This is my first real political campaign and i plan on enjoying every minute of it. ; )
Best,
Tom
